Profile

James N. Hebish

Attorney at law · California & New York

James is a litigator and real estate lawyer who came to the law from the business side, as a founder, a lender and an asset manager. He reads a contract, a cap table or a rent roll the way a principal does: for cash flow, risk and leverage.

Before law school he founded clientconnect.ai, a legal technology company, and sold it in a deal that included venture-backed stock as consideration, so he knows how SAFEs, valuation caps and stock consideration look from the founder’s side of the table. He underwrote roughly $2 billion in commercial real estate loan commitments in real estate finance at PNC, and as an asset manager on a multifamily portfolio of more than 600 units he handled a CMBS loan modification and the environmental remediation of an 82-unit development site.

At Columbia Law School he led the Commercial Real Estate Law Society and served as a teaching assistant for Property. He began practice at Debevoise & Plimpton, where he worked on insurance matters, and then joined the real estate group at Skadden, where he worked on the refinancing and sale of luxury hospitality assets and the lease and construction of a large data center in Europe.

Today he litigates in California state court for businesses and property owners, handling law and motion, written discovery, ex parte applications and settlement, and continues to advise on leasing, finance and development. He is General Counsel of New Century Development, a Long Beach real estate company founded in 2006, and practices from his law office in downtown Long Beach.
